Top tips for oily skin

Oily skin and blemishes often come hand in hand. When your pores produce too much sebum (oil) they can become clogged, causing spots.

If you’re not sure what type of skin you have, an easy way to tell is to wash your face and pat it dry, then leave it product free for 30 minutes. If your skin feels greasy to the touch and isn’t dry, you probably have oily skin.

Here are our top tips for helping to care for oily skin:

1) Use a simple face wash that isn’t too harsh on your skin. Cleanse twice a day and no more than that or your skin may overcompensate and actually produce more oil.

2) Use blotting papers throughout the day. If you feel like your skin gets excess grease throughout the day, use blotting paper or some clean kitchen towel to gently dab the excess away.

3) Choose water based, oil free make-up. Look at the labels on your foundation and concealer to find products that are less clogging on your pores. Go without make-up whenever you can.

4) Choose skin care products that are labelled 'oil free' or 'noncomedogenic'. Our Anti-blemish & Scar Repair Moisturiser (coming soon to the US store!) is noncomedogenic and oil free – this means it will hydrate your skin without clogging your pores.

5) Always make sure you remove your make-up thoroughly before bed, otherwise you risk your skin producing even more oil as you sleep and mixing with the bacteria on your skin, creating the perfect environment for a breakout.

6) If your skin is very oily and you find moisturiser is too much – use our serum as your moisturiser.

7) Do a honey mask. This is a natural humectant which will keep skin moisturised but not oily. Apply a thin layer to your skin for 10-15 minutes and wash off with warm water.

8) Use a clay mask twice a week. Clay helps to absorb oil and draws out impurities as it dries.

9) Use oatmeal as a natural exfoliator. This will help absorb oil, remove dead skin and unclog pores. Mix half a cup of ground oats with hot water to make a paste and stir in 1 tablespoon of honey. Massage into the skin for a few minutes and rinse off with warm water.

10) Be careful with toners. Although they may remove the top layer of oil and feel like they are helping, they can irritate your skin and cause it to produce more oil to overcompensate

Although having oily skin can be frustrating, there are actually some fabulous benefits to having naturally oily skin.

Any fine lines or wrinkles will be less visible and you are unlikely to get any dry skin patches.
