Decade by Decade: Skin Care In Your...
Your skin changes as you get older. As it does, you’ll find that you need to adapt your skin care to reflect this.
So we’ve put together a short guide on how to look after your skin as well as our recommended products for each decade.
Here are our top tips when you're in your...
...teens
In your teens, your skin is normally more sensitive than in later years, and most people are prone to breakouts during this time due to hormonal changes (so don’t panic as this is completely normal!). Here are a few things we advise for you:
- Keep your skin clean by using a face wash/ cleanser twice a day and warm water. This will help control oil and reduce bacteria to prevent spots.
- We recommend using our Anti-blemish & Scar Repair Serum twice a day. This will help protect your skin from breakouts and heal existing spots.
- Be careful not to try everything all at once! Your skin can be more sensitive at this age so always do a test patch with new ingredients and be careful not to overdo it with your skin care. Use one thing at a time consistently so you can see what’s working.
- Don’t squeeze your spots. Get into this habit now or you risk having permanent scars later in life (trust us on this one, as tempting as it is – it’s not worth it!)
- Go to the doctors if nothing is working and your acne isn’t improving.
- Be consistent with your skin care routine. Wash your face twice daily and apply your serum / any acne treatments followed by oil-free moisturiser.
- Make sure you fill your social feeds with examples of real skin and unfollow/ delete anyone who is making you feel bad about the way you look.
...twenties
In your twenties, your skin is usually stronger than in your teenage years, and although acne is normally less severe at this age, many people still suffer with it, so it’s important to look after your skin and keep it as healthy as possible for the future.
- Make sure you start using SPF everyday (at least factor 30) and not just when you’re on holiday. Buy a moisturiser that contains SPF and apply it every morning after your serum. Sun exposure is the no.1 cause of wrinkles so make sure you don’t overdo it sunbathing and stay away from those sunbeds!
- Make sure you are eating healthily and drinking plenty of water whenever you can (your body and skin will thank you in later years!)
- Don’t stress about having flawless skin. Remember that many of the images you see online are edited and filtered and aren’t a true reflection of real skin.
...thirties
When you reach your thirties, you may find that your skin isn’t quite as smooth as your twenties, and that’s ok! You may need a bit more extra support to bring out your natural glow, but that’s easily done. Here’s our top tips for caring for your skin in your thirties:
- Start using a night cream. This will help to keep your skin moisturised and will give your skin a chance to repair itself each night.
- We recommend using our silver mask 2- 3 times a week. This contains an intense dose of Silver Chitoderm to help control breakouts and prevent fine lines, as well as brightening your complexion.
- Often in your thirties your skin can go through a lot of hormonal changes, particularly if you're on birth control or are going through pregnancy during this time. Ensure you keep your skin care routine consistent, use our Anti-blemish & Scar Repair Serum to help minimize breakouts.
- Think about adding vitamin C to your skin care routine to help protect your skin from pollutants and boost collagen.
- You know what you like skin care wise so do what makes you feel good!
...forties
When you’re in your forties, skin care might sometimes seem like the last thing on the to do list, but make sure you don’t neglect it. Taking care of your skin can be a real confidence booster and will help your skin stay healthy looking in later years. Here’s our top advice:
- Cleanse with a Hydrating Cleanser twice a day. Our Everyday Cleanser will refresh, smooth and remove dead skin cells, while helping to even out your skin tone and prevent blemishes. It also smells like you’re in a spa so is the perfect quick moment of ‘me’ time to help you relax.
- As your natural skin cell turnover slows, it's important to give it a helping hand. So, ensure you are exfoliating regularly (1-2 times a week) and invest in a product that speeds up skin cell renewal such as our Age Defence Serum which is specially designed to help prevent fine lines by regenerating your skin cells.
- Try not to stress about wrinkles. They are a natural part of life and show how far you’ve come in life since your twenties.
- Don’t forget to drink water and get enough sleep. You’re probably at a time in your life where you’re busy looking after everyone else but make sure you leave time for you as well. Staying hydrated is vital for keeping your skin healthy and sleep is essential for allowing your skin cells time to repair overnight.
...fifties & beyond
As your skin matures, it loses elastin and moisture so you may find your skin care routine has probably changed quite a lot from your younger years. Here’s our top tips for looking after your skin in your fifties and beyond:
- Keep your skin moisturised. Your skin loses moisture and HA as it ages. We recommend using our Super Hydrating Elixir before moisturising as it will replenish your skin with much needed HA, bringing water to the surface of the skin, helping it look plumper and firmer.
- Try using your 47 Skin serum on the backs of your hands to help keep the skin looking fresh and smooth.
- Hormonal changes due to menopause can mean that you may find yourself suddenly breaking out. We understand how difficult this can be, especially at this age. If you’re struggling with acne, we recommend using our Anti-blemish & Scar Repair Serum. It will help to control blemishes without drying out your skin.
- Don’t be fooled by expensive skin care gimmicks and false promises. Wrinkles are a natural part of being this age and no amount of skin care can remove them completely. Instead, focus on what makes you feel good about yourself.
